Beyond sunscreen:
why physical shade matters.

Sun protection should not depend on a single line of defence.

For decades, sunscreen has been treated as the default response to ultraviolet exposure. Sunscreen can play an important role in sun safety, but emerging research also shows why it should not be treated as complete protection — or as a substitute for shade, protective clothing and responsible exposure habits.

Wavelength

UVA and UVB are different.

Ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth's surface is generally divided into UVA and UVB. They behave differently, and they damage differently.

UVB

UVB is strongly associated with sunburn, direct DNA damage, seasonal and time-of-day variation, and increased skin-cancer risk. Traditional sun-protection measurements have often focused heavily on preventing UVB-related sunburn.

UVA

UVA penetrates deeper into the skin and is associated with premature skin ageing, pigmentation, oxidative stress, indirect DNA damage and contributions to skin-cancer development. You can receive meaningful UVA exposure without ever developing a sunburn.

This is one reason broad-spectrum protection and physical shade are important. Preventing visible redness is not the same as eliminating ultraviolet exposure.

What recent research has found

Certain sunscreen ingredients
can enter the bloodstream.

Two randomized clinical trials conducted by researchers from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration examined the systemic absorption of several active ingredients used in chemical sunscreens.

The tested ingredients included:

  • Avobenzone
  • Oxybenzone
  • Octocrylene
  • Ecamsule
  • Homosalate
  • Octisalate
  • Octinoxate

Under controlled application conditions, all of the tested ingredients reached blood concentrations above the FDA threshold used to determine when additional safety studies should be considered.

The follow-up study also found that some ingredients remained detectable in participants' plasma for days after the final application.

These findings demonstrate that certain sunscreen ingredients are not confined entirely to the skin's surface. They can be absorbed into the body in measurable amounts.

What these studies do not establish

The FDA studies established systemic absorption. They did not establish that normal sunscreen use causes hormonal disorders, cancer or other systemic illness. The researchers specifically concluded that the clinical significance of the absorption findings remained uncertain and required further investigation.

The regulatory threshold cited is not a toxicity limit. Exceeding it does not mean an ingredient has been proven dangerous — it means additional toxicology and safety information may be needed.

For consumers who prefer to reduce unnecessary chemical exposure, physical shade offers a non-topical layer of protection that does not depend on ingredients being absorbed into the skin.

Open questions

Questions about long-term
chemical exposure.

Researchers continue to investigate the biological activity of chemical ultraviolet filters. Laboratory activity or systemic detection does not by itself demonstrate clinically meaningful endocrine harm in people using sunscreen normally.

These questions do not establish that chemical sunscreens are unsafe. They demonstrate why continued safety research and multiple forms of sun protection remain important.

The sunscreen paradox

Sunscreen use has increased,
yet melanoma rates have too.

Researchers have observed that melanoma incidence has increased in many countries despite greater sunscreen availability, stronger public-awareness campaigns and rising sunscreen sales. A multi-country ecological study examining the United States, England, Australia and Sweden found positive statistical associations between sunscreen sales and melanoma incidence in several of the markets studied.

This does not prove that sunscreen causes melanoma

Ecological studies compare population-level trends. They cannot determine whether the individuals purchasing or using sunscreen are the same individuals later diagnosed with melanoma.

The relationship may be affected by:

  • Increased recreational sun exposure
  • Tanning behaviour
  • Population ageing
  • Greater public awareness
  • Improved screening and diagnosis
  • Changes in diagnostic practices
  • More frequent skin examinations
  • Differences in sunscreen formulation
  • Inadequate UVA protection
  • Incorrect or insufficient application
  • Failure to reapply
  • Skin type and genetic susceptibility

The data nevertheless highlight an important lesson: increasing sunscreen consumption alone has not eliminated the public-health burden of melanoma. A more complete approach to sun safety is necessary.

A false sense of security.

People who apply sunscreen may feel protected enough to remain in direct sunlight longer than they otherwise would. They may use less than required, miss exposed areas, fail to reapply, or misunderstand what the labelled protection rating means. The problem is not necessarily sunscreen itself — it is relying on sunscreen as permission for unlimited sun exposure.

Protection without application

Topical performance

For sunscreen to perform as labelled it must be:

  • Applied in a sufficient quantity
  • Spread evenly
  • Applied to every exposed area
  • Used before exposure when directed
  • Reapplied at appropriate intervals
  • Reapplied after swimming or sweating
  • Replaced before it expires
  • Stored under appropriate conditions

In real-world conditions, people frequently apply less sunscreen than the amount used to establish the labelled SPF.

Physical shade operates differently. A properly designed shade barrier intercepts a portion of incoming ultraviolet radiation before it reaches the covered skin. It does not need to be spread evenly over the body, absorbed by the skin, or reapplied every two hours.

That makes physical shade a valuable additional layer — not a promise of total protection.

The honest limit

Shade is not total
isolation from UV.

No umbrella should be described as creating a completely ultraviolet-free environment unless that claim has been established through appropriate product-specific testing under the relevant conditions.

Ultraviolet radiation can still reach a person beneath an umbrella through:

  • Open sides
  • Changes in solar angle
  • Diffuse radiation from the atmosphere
  • Reflection from water
  • Reflection from sand
  • Reflection from concrete
  • Reflection from snow
  • Movement outside the covered area

For this reason, IntelliBrella™ should be understood as a tool for reducing exposure within its area of coverage — not as a guarantee that all ultraviolet radiation has been eliminated. Actual performance claims should be based on testing of the final production canopy and complete product configuration.

A layered strategy

No single product
should carry it all.

Depending on personal circumstances and public-health guidance, a layered approach may include:

  • Seeking physical shade
  • Limiting prolonged exposure during periods of intense sunlight
  • Wearing tightly woven or ultraviolet-protective clothing
  • Wearing a broad-brimmed hat
  • Protecting the eyes with suitable sunglasses
  • Using an appropriate broad-spectrum sunscreen
  • Reapplying sunscreen as directed
  • Monitoring the skin for changes
  • Consulting a qualified healthcare professional about individual risks

Our scientific position

We believe consumers deserve accurate
information rather than absolute claims.

  • Certain chemical sunscreen ingredients can be absorbed systemically under the conditions evaluated in FDA-sponsored clinical trials.
  • Systemic absorption above the FDA testing threshold indicates a need for additional safety evaluation; it does not by itself prove toxicity.
  • Rising sunscreen sales and rising melanoma incidence have occurred during overlapping periods in several countries, but population-level correlations cannot establish that sunscreen causes melanoma.
  • Sunscreen effectiveness depends heavily on formulation, spectrum of protection, quantity applied, reapplication and user behaviour.
  • Sunscreen should not be used to justify unlimited exposure to direct sunlight.
  • Physical shade is widely recognised as an important component of a comprehensive sun-protection strategy.
  • No single umbrella, sunscreen or garment should be represented as providing complete protection under every real-world condition.
